Giancarlo Stanton smashed two more home runs in Thursday’s home win over the Atlanta Braves, giving him 59 so far this season.

Giancarlo Stanton inched closer to MLB history in the Miami Marlins’ 7-1 victory Thursday night over the Atlanta Braves … twice. He entered the night having launched 57 home runs so far in the 2017 season, a total that was tied for 14th on the all-time single season home run list. He exited the night tied for 9th on that same list.

Stanton launched two more home runs in the Marlins’ win over the Braves: a solo shot and a two-run blast. This moved his home run total up from 57 to 59 and decreased its distance from 60 from 3 down to 1 as he continues his quest to become just the sixth player in MLB history to hit 60 or more home runs in a single season.

The question is, will he have enough time to reach the historic mark? The 27-year-old will have three more games before this season ends during which he can potentially hit his 60th home run of the season to etch his names among the greats, including Barry Bonds, Mark McGwire, Sammy Sosa, Roger Maris and Babe Ruth.

As referenced above, just five players in MLB history have launched 60 or more home runs in a single season before. They have done so a combined eight times. The most recent players who did so were Barry Bonds and Sammy Sosa in the 2001 season. They hit 73 and 64 home runs that year, respectively. If Stanton is able to join them, he will have ended a 16-year power drought of 60-home run hitters.

The Marlins (75-84) are back in action tomorrow night in the second game of a four-game home stand against the Braves (71-88) that will close out their 2017 campaign. While the Marlins have no chance at making the playoffs, Stanton is, without a doubt, a player that could win this year’s National League MVP award given the excessive amount of success he has had this year.
