ALCS Game 7, Astros vs. Yankees: Highlights, recap and more

The Houston Astros beat the New York Yankees 4-0 in Game 7 of the 2017 ALCS in Houston.

A pitchers duel broke out between the Astros and the Yankees — shocking, right? CC Sabathia and Charlie Morton showed out to begin the decisive Game 7 on Saturday night. But after 3.5 innings, it was Houston that finally broke the deadlock and eventually went on to win the game. The Astros fended off a Yankees offensive arsenal to advance to their first World Series since 2005.

Evan Gattis opened up the scoring with a solo shot to left center. For the first time since Game 4, New York’s back was against the wall. And for a second consecutive game, Houston’s bats came alive. Jose Altuve opened up scoring in the fifth with a solo dinger to right field. Furthermore, former Yankee Brian McCann knocked in two runs to tack on to Houston’s fifth-inning total. For the most part, the Bronx Bombers failed to get anything done. Whenever contact was made or the Yankees got a 50/50 chance at a call, things just didn’t go their way. Whether it was a bang-bang play at the plate or a leaping catch in left-center, Houston’s defense was lights out all night.

With the home crowd behind them, Lance McCullers recorded the final out and clinched Houston’s first ALCS victory in franchise history (moved from NL to AL in 2013). The 4-3 series win sent the Houston Astros to the World Series, where they will face off against the Los Angeles Dodgers.

Three Stars

1. Charlie Morton: Although Houston fans were skeptical about starting Morton in Game 7, he delivered and then some. When it was all said and done, he tossed five scoreless frames, allowing just two hits.
2. Jose Altuve: Who else but Altuve? It had to be Houston’s (and likely the league’s) MVP. He continued to shine in the field and kicked off a three-run fifth inning with a solo homer.
3. The Lumberjack Bros: At first, it was Evan Gattis who led things off for the Astros with a solo shot. However, Brian McCann wasn’t about to let his lookalike get away
