Real Madrid and Borussia Dortmund were the favorites to advance out of the group when the draw was made. However, only Madrid will be moving onto the round of 16. The defending champions will finish second in the group regardless of the outcome on Wednesday. Borussia Dortmund have been one of the biggest disappointments in Europe. After five games, Dortmund have only two points, drawing twice with Apoel Nicosia.
Real Madrid have struggled lately by their standards. Over their last five La Liga games, Madrid have picked up only eight points. Cristiano Ronaldo has struggled domestically but has been incredible in Champions League. The Portuguese superstar has scored eight goals in the group stage. However, with Madrid’s spot in the round of 16 already guaranteed, Zinédine Zidane might opt to rest his stars.
Outside of a win against third league club Magdeburg in the DFB Pokal, Borussia Dortmund have not won a game in the Champions League or Bundesliga since Sept. 30. Since then, Dortmund have picked up only three points in seven Bundesliga games, drawn twice with Apoel Nicosia and lost to Tottenham in Champions League. The pressure is on manager Peter Bosz, who could be out of a job if his team continues to struggle.
