Newcastle host Everton at St. James’ Park on Wednesday in a battle of teams going in opposite directions. Rafa Benitez’s team has lost six of their previous seven games, falling to 16th in the league table. Everton have climbed up the table after picking up seven points in their last three games.
Newcastle suffered a heartbreaking loss in their last game. Ayoze Pérez scored an own goal in the 86th minute, handing Leicester a 3-2 win. The Magpies have been thrashed defensively over the last five games, allowing 15 goals. Overall, Newcastle have allowed the seventh most goals this year. Offensively, Newcastle are middle of the pack with 16 goals but do not have a classic goal scorer that the team can feed in the box. Dwight Gayle and Joselu both scored against Leicester and share the team led with three goals apiece.
Everton were able to hold Liverpool to a 1-1 draw in the Merseyside derby. Wayne Rooney score the lone goal for the Toffees and has been a pleasant surprise this season. The former England captain has scored eight goals for Everton this season. As a team, Everton are ninth with 20 goals over their first 16 games. Defensively, Everton have allowed only one goal over their past three games. However, the club is still near the bottom with 29 goals against.
