Every winter Olympic sport ranked by how frequently your uncle thinks ‘I could do that’
7. Figure skating
There’s one reason and one reason only figure skating is not a lot higher on this list — not too many uncles would be proud to brag about being able to figure skate. Usually, an uncle who brags about being able to perform an Olympic sport is straight up lying to make himself seem a lot more masculine or show off. Claiming to know how to figure skate does quite the opposite. Now, that’s not to say figure skating is feminine, but it’s typically overshadowed by other sports (like the biathlon) amongst men.
Figure skating is the oldest Winter Olympic sport in the world, after being added to the games in 1908. In the 2018 Winter Olympics in PyeongChang, five figure skating competitions are set to take place. The five events run from Feb. 9 to Feb. 23. Figure skating events include individual, paired and team dances for both men and women. Over the years, figure skating has made itself one of the most popular and widely covered sports in the games. Millions tune in every winter games to witness the beautiful spectacle that is figure skating.
Much like every other event in the Olympics, figure skating is not a competition one could just pick up a pair of skates and compete in. It’s insanely difficult, requiring years of practice and a ton of patience. Figure skating may look somewhat easy to those overconfident uncles out there who know how to ice skate, but make no mistake, it couldn’t be further from easy. Maybe try taking your hand off the side rail at the ice rink next time before you assume figure skating isn’t difficult.
