Tottenham enter their second game of 2018 in a logjam of teams battling for the final spot in the top four. Liverpool, Tottenham and Arsenal are all within a few points of each other as the second half of the season starts. West Ham have struggled for the majority of the season and are battling a potential relegation. On Thursday, Tottenham host West Ham at Wembley Stadium.
After an up and down November for Spurs, manager Mauricio Pochettino has righted the ship and put his club back on track. England international Harry Kane had an incredible December. The 24-year-old scored hat-tricks in back to back games to end 2017. In his first 19 games, Kane scored a Premier League best 18 goals. Defensively, Tottenham have taken a slight step backward after being one of the best defensive teams a season ago. The loss of center-back Toby Alderweireld to injury has been difficult to overcome in the past but Davinson Sánchez has helped lessen the loss of Alderweireld.
West Ham have struggled this season to defend this season, allowing the second most goals, behind only Stoke. Despite getting better results under David Moyes since he took over for Slaven Bilic, he has yet to solve the Hammers’ defensive woes. In the summer, West Ham bought Marko Arnautovic from Stoke for over €22 million. After an extremely slow start to the season, Arnautovic started finding the back of the net, scoring four goals in his last three games of 2017.
