James Franco robbed us of Tommy Wiseau’s Golden Globe speech
By Josh Hill
James Franco won Best Actor in a Drama for The Disaster Artist and celebrated by bringing Tommy Wiseau on stage with him.
If you haven’t heard of The Room, then you’ve received a crash course these last few months thanks to The Disaster Artist. James Franco’s film about the making of the worst movie ever made is unironically one of the best movies of the year.
Franco picked up a Golden Globe for Best Actor, and in doing so brought the inspiration for the whole thing up on stage with him — Tommy Wiseau.
The best part of the whole moment was when Wiseau got on stage and went for the mic to say something. Franco shut that down pretty quick, but it was probably the only way that moment could have gone.
What was he going to say? Thanks to Franco, we’re never going to know. Here’s a quick armchair quarterback guess at what Wiseau might have said.
- “Oh hai, Mark”
- “You’re tearing me apart, Franco”
- “You’re welcome”
That last one would have been perfect. For years people have killed The Room for being the best worst movie ever made, and rightfully so. But in making the movie, Wiseau tapped into the primal urge we all have to make our dreams come true, even if that dream isn’t as clean as you might imagine.
The fact that The Room is still talked about today is remarkable. That it could end up winning people Oscars — and has already won Franco an acting Globe — is phenomenal. Wiseau may have made a movie that is a pile of trash by every estimation of quality, but it’s a gift that continues to give so much more than anyone every thought.
