The Weekend Update is the best part of SNL every week, but which parts stood out in the latest episode?

Every week I write about SNL, and every week there’s a note about how the Weekend Update is the best thing about a given episode. It’s not a coincidence that the highlight of the series over the last few years has been Colin Jost and Michael Che at the Update desk. They don’t earn a summer primetime spinoff on pure luck and good looks — there’s a track record of success.

So rather than review Sam Rockwell’s episode like every other week (it wasn’t good and he dropped an F-Bomb, the end), let’s just talk about what we all want to talk about anyways. Here’s the best stuff from this weekend’s trip to the Weekend Update desk.

Best Jokes

3. “The most amazing thing is Trump said all of his most racist stuff right before Martin Luther King Day. Which is like pounding a case of beer on your way to rehab.” (Colin Jost)

4. “It was reported that just before the election last year, President Trump’s personal lawyer arranged a six-figure payment to cover up an alleged affair between Trump and porn star Stormy Daniels. So at least there’s on storm Trump will pay for. ” (Colin Jost)

1. “Trump is the worst possible person to point [that lying is bad], he lies all the time. It’s like listening to O.J. complain about loopholes in the justice system.” (Michael Che)

Scorecard

Jost – 2
Che -1

More Keenan Thompson as Lavar Ball, please

There are few things that we should all be “very here” for on SNL. They’ve spun off characters before to varying degrees of success (for every Wayne’s World there’s a Wayne’s World 2). It’s not often that something that works as a few minutes of comedy can be extended into something more.

If they every spun off a series where Keenan Thompson was Lavar Ball, that’s something I’d be very here for.

Thompson has had some fantastic characters over his seemingly endless tenure at SNL. Lavar isn’t an original invention, but the spot-on spin that Thompson puts on Ball makes it feel like it could be made up from his whacky imagination.

Here’s the full segment:

That’s what comedy laced with gold trimming looks and sounds like. If we have to stomach Lavar Ball being a part of every sports news cycle, thank the lord for Thompson numbing the pain a little.

Aidy Bryant went hard in the paint

Presented, without comment:

For those in back, who didn’t hear it:

Bryant is nearing that Kate McKinnon realm of untouchability, where anytime she’s on-screen you need to put down whatever you’re doing. More often than not she’s out there saving a skit from floundering; almost never is she given time at the Update desk.

This is a perfect example of the genius that she possesses and why we need to see more of her everywhere on SNL. Aidy Bryant is one of the best things about the show we don’t talk about enough, and that needs to change.
