Phil Jones’ own goal to give Tottenham a two goal lead

Speaking of costly defensive blunders, this one comes courtesy of another former highly touted player who has had a tough season. Phil Jones has come a long way since the days when he was one of the most coveted English defenders.

We have to remark on the quality of the finish here. Had Phil Jones tried  to come up with a better finish he would have been hard pressed to do so. Everything about the (own) goal looks like textbook finishing, from the way he opens up his hips to the perfect deflection of the ball into the roof of the net.

Jones puts the ball into the net with the demeanor of a man who has scored many goals from similar circumstances. Had this happened in a distant, less glamorous league there would have been serious calls for match-fixing investigations.
