Richard Sherman’s future with the Seattle Seahawks is up in the air, so here are five teams who could make a play for him this offseason.

Basically a year ago at this time, rumors surfaced regarding the Seattle Seahawks being willing to trade cornerback Richard Sherman. A deal did not happen, but now Sherman is a free agent after the Seahawks released him to save $11 million (with a $13.2 million salary cap hit) in 2018.

The Seahawks are cleaning house this offseason. Pete Carroll has overhauled his coaching staff, and the defensive side of the ball is set for similar turnover. Safety Earl Thomas has hinted at a holdout without a contract extension heading into the final year of his contract, and with Sherman and Bennett now gone, there’s no doubt of the team’s direction.

But shifting back toward Sherman, these five teams could consider making a move to sign him.

5. New England Patriots

The Patriots are set to lose Malcolm Butler in free agency. With Aqib Talib being traded to the Los Angeles Rams on Friday night, Sherman now becomes the best, veteran option for the team.

Sherman is 29 years old but when he was healthy last year, remained one of the league’s best corners. Seattle dumped Sherman for cap purposes, and New England could be the recipient of a gift.

Sherman would probably like to land with a Super Bowl contender considering the phase of his career. The Patriots are obviously that until further notice, but Bill Belichick may see a declining player and the kind of outspoken personality he wouldn’t want.
