After a breakout year with the 2017 San Francisco 49ers, the 49ers have extended wide receiver Marquise Goodwin for three more years at $20.3 million.

The San Francisco 49ers improved tremendously down the stretch last season. While they only finished 6-10 on the year, they didn’t lose games when Jimmy Garoppolo became their starting quarterback. Apparently, the 49ers want to have a familiar offensive weapon in wide receiver Marquise Goodwin around for a long time.

According to Ian Rapoport of The NFL Network, “the 49ers and [wide receiver] Marquise Goodwin agreed on a 3-year extension worth $20.3M with $10M guaranteed.” Goodwin had initially signed a two-year, $6 million deal with the 49ers in 2017 after spending his first four years in the NFL with the Buffalo Bills out of Texas.

Goodwin set career highs with the 2017 49ers in terms of games played (16), receptions (56) and receiving yards (962). Though he only had two touchdown catches last year, keep in mind that Brian Hoyer and C.J. Beathard were the quarterbacks slinging him the pigskin until the middle of November. That is when Garoppolo took over as the 49ers’ starting quarterback.

Since San Francisco has its franchise quarterback of the future in Garoppolo, the 49ers can now build a team around their handsome signal caller. San Francisco has the No. 9 overall pick in the upcoming 2018 NFL Draft. The 49ers also have $67,029,331 in available cap space this spring. That is the fifth-most in the NFL.

Simply put, the 49ers had the cap flexibility to pay a guy they really like going forward in Goodwin above market value. There is a chance that general manager John Lynch isn’t in love with any of the overpriced free agent wide receivers that will be hitting the market in a few weeks.

Putting together a new deal for Goodwin is probably best for both parties. Goodwin gets paid and it’s only a $10 million guaranteed deal. With a full season together, Goodwin could have his first career 1,000 receiving yard season with Garoppolo slinging him the ball.

San Francisco has a fourth-place schedule next season. With their influx of talent since Lynch and head coach Kyle Shanahan have taken over a year ago, the 49ers could be poised to win over 10 games this fall and make the NFC playoffs. San Francisco has missed the playoffs the last four years after falling to the division rival Seattle Seahawks in the 2013 NFC Championship.
