2018 NFL Combine: 10 players who helped their stock
By Joe Romano
People are going to see this ranking and be distraught. There were scouts who said that the combine was going to be renamed in Saquon Barkley’s honor. He put on a show in Indianapolis, as expected. His results still blew scouts and teams away.
Barkley is a very rare blend of size and speed. He measured in at 6-feet and 220 pounds. His weight places him in the 96th percentile of all running backs, according to mockdraftable. Big backs should not move the way this guy does.
As one of college football’s best players and the clear cut cream of the crop in a talented running back class, Barkley had little to gain from competing in Indianapolis. He showed his competitive nature by doing all the drills, and doing them well.
The 40 yard dash was the start, and Barkley ran it in 4.4 seconds. That is in the 93rd percentile, if his weight is factored in, the number is jaw dropping. His explosive day continued with a 41 inch vertical jump, which stacks up to the 96th percentile. The kicker to all these impressive athletic feats were that they came only a day after he put up 29 reps of 225 pounds on the bench press. That number may not mean much to a running back but it shows Barkley’s commitment in the weight room and raw strength. He is the best running back in the class and made a case for the best player.
