5 biggest losers of NFL free agency
2. Seattle Seahawks
Not to be outdone by the Cardinals’ inability to use free agency to catch up to the presumed NFC West frontrunners, the Seattle Seahawks had a tumultuous start to the league year that has resulted in the team’s most recognizable position group being completely transformed.
The Legion of Boom, as Seattle’s secondary has long been referred to, is no more. Cornerback Richard Sherman was released, only to quickly sign with divisional rivals the San Francisco 49ers. Fellow cornerback Jeremy Lane was also released, and free agent safety Deshawn Shead has since signed on with the Detroit Lions. The Seahawks also lost an important member of their front seven, tackle Sheldon Richardson.
Seattle’s offense also took a hit in free agency, with the team losing two key passing targets for quarterback Russell Wilson. Tight end Jimmy Graham landed with the Green Bay Packers and receiver Paul Richardson went to Washington. Meanwhile, the team hasn’t managed to do anything to upgrade their offensive line, which is one of their most glaring deficiencies. Wilson was sacked 43 times a year ago, and the run game ranked 23rd in yards and 31st in touchdowns. Fixing this will have to wait until April’s NFL Draft.
