player. 77. . G. Alabama. Collin Sexton. 12

In the NBA this year, the league average 3-point percentage was 36.2. Sexton shot 34 percent at Alabama with awful spacing, basically no player movement near or away from the ball, and the green light on some bad attempts. It’s difficult for me to imagine that number not going up in the NBA.

We talk about Trae Young’s value as it relates to his ability to nail 3s on the move, comparing him to Steph Curry and Damian Lillard as offensive peak comparisons based on that one ability. It truly transcends defensive scheming, and the best guards have to be able to do it.

While I believe Young will join that elite group at the next level, it’s tough to project what will happen for Sexton. There’s more loose motion in his shot, but he takes plenty off the dribble and nails them at a reasonably high rate. 34 percent for the season is better than I think most people would guess who watched the freshman in January and February. The NBA is a much better situation for shooting than college basketball.

If Sexton at least displays the ability to keep pull his defender over the screen and keeps the point-of-attack defender honest, how far below Young’s value as a scorer is his, really? He has shown more finishing through contact, and in the open court. We talk about these guys like they’re Harry Potter and Voldemort, that one must fall as the other rises. The truth is this draft has one transcendent point guard and another elite option.
