Real Madrid beat Bayern Munich 2-1 in the Champions League on Wednesday, April 25. Here are all the highlights from the match.

Real Madrid took a huge step to advancing to their third straight Champions League final on Wednesday, defeating Bayern Munich 2-1 in Germany. Marcelo and Marco Asensio scored the goals for Real, while Joshua Kimmich scored the lone goal for Bayern.

Bayern and Real both opened the first half with good scoring opportunities in the first half but couldn’t finish. The game took its first turn in the fifth minute when Arjen Robben went down. The Dutch winger was grabbing his feet and calves as the Bayern team doctor came out to look at him. Ultimately, Jupp Heynckes was forced to use his first substitution, bringing on Thiago Alcantara and shifting Thomas Muller out wide for the injured Robben.

Bayern opened the scoring in the 28th minute. Sven Ulreich got the ball back in fast from a goal-kick, playing it into Joshua Kimmich, who moved it forward to and continued his run. James Rodriguez played a slick ball back to Kimmich. With Robert Lewandowski running down the middle and Franck Ribery running toward the far post, the defenders and Kaylor Navas expected a cross. Instead Kimmich, unleashed a powerful striker Navas could only get finger tips on.

Bayern continued their attack, when Jerome Boateng made an uncharacteristic run forward. Boateng ran somewhat out of control, eventually playing a ball forward to Lewandowski. However, Boateng went down after the pass. The team doctor again came out, eventually escorting the German center-back to the locker room. Heynckes was forced to burn his second sub in the 34th minute, bringing on Niklas Sule.

Thiago sent Ribery in all alone on Navas. However, the Frenchman took a heavy touch allowing a hard-charging Navas to grab the ball. Outside of the poor touch, Ribery had a very strong first half, often getting the best of Dani Carvajal.

Real Madrid tied the game with a beautiful volley from Marcelo. Javi Martinez hesitated on the clearance, and sent the ball right in front of Marcelo. The Brazilian sent a powerful volley into the bottom corner.

Zinedine Zidane made his first sub at halftime, bringing on Marco Asensio for Isco. The move would pay off less than 15 minutes later. Real cleared a Bayern corner to Kimmich, who headed it over to Rafinha, who slipped. Lucas Vazquez and Asensio went in on a two-on-one against Kimmich, with Asensio ultimately finishing.

Navas continued his strong play in the second half, robbing Ribery twice in a matter of minutes. While Bayern had a better attack in the second half, they couldn’t get the bounces they needed to beat Navas. The Madrid keeper was excellent on Wednesday, making several big saves throughout the game.
