The trifecta is one of the most complicated — and lucrative — bets you can make at a horse race. Here’s what the 2018 Kentucky Oaks trifecta paid out.

To win a trifecta bet, you must correctly pick the three horses that will win, place and show and you must also correctly pick the order in which they do so. It’s a tricky bet to get right — especially when, in the case of the 2018 Kentucky Oaks field, so many of the horses shared similar odds.

Midnight Bisou (5-2) and Monomoy Girl (2-1) were favorites and if you picked them in the right order, you were in luck. Monomoy Girl won with Wonder Gadot (20-1) placing second and Midnight Bisou showing. If you bet on those three horses in that correct order, you were taking home $180 on a $1 bet.

(The superfecta, in which you named Eskimo Kisses as the fourth place finisher, paid out $1,387 on a $1 bet. The exacta, in which you only named Monomoy Girl and Wonder Gadot as 1-2 paid out $96 on a $2 bet.)

In 2017, the trifecta paid out  $2,863 to those who correctly picked Abel Tasman-Daddy’s Little Darling-Lockdown to win, place and show at the Kentucky Oaks on a $1 bet. So, for those who were hoping a repeat of last year’s magic, the fact two of three horses had very good odds tamed the excitement some.

Still, it’s a nice little purse to take into the Derby, where this year truly feels like anything can happen. The betting (and horse racing) festivities continue on Saturday, May 5 with the Kentucky Derby, which promises higher stakes and bigger profiles.
