It turns out the Yankees might not be that high on Miguel Andujar

If you ask Brian Cashman then he’d tell you that Miguel Andujar is his favorite. If you ask someone else, well then they might tell you a different story.

The New York Yankees are in the market for pitching this trade deadline, and they have the assets to acquire just about whoever they want. Just because they have the assets doesn’t mean they want to use all of said assets though.

A few days ago Yankees general manager Brian Cashman had made it very clear that the Yankees were high on their third baseman Miguel Andujar.  He even went as far as to say that Andujar had not been included in any trade talks ever since he was in Double-A.

Pretty strong words for a rookie you might say. If you ask other executives around the league they might tell you a different story. According to Joel Sherman of the New York Post rival executives believe the Yankees are just trying to drive up Andujar’s value.

Part of the reason other execs believe this is because Cashman made the mistake of saying rookie second baseman Gleyber Torres was untouchable. While Torres is untouchable in a trade it not worth actually saying out loud because it leads to a ridiculous amount of follow up questions.

Given Andujar’s free-swinging nature, and defensive struggles analytics wise (he’s the worst defensive third baseman according to Fangraphs). Maybe the Yankees would actually be incentivized to trade him for say, Manny Machado.

While he still struggles on defense his numbers at the plate are not only the best among rookies, including his teammate Torres. But they’re outstanding in comparison to the rest of baseball.

Cashman isn’t going to make the same mistake he did when talking about Torres, but you’d be hard-pressed to believe that the Yankees would actually part with Andujar given the season he’s having now and his future potential.
