Comic-Con 2018: Did SDCC Legacies trailer spoil the end of The Originals?

Comic-Con provided a first look at the latest The Vampire Diaries spinoff Legacies. But, The Originals is not done with its run, and the panel and trailer for the new show may provide some clues to how The Originals might end.

Ever since it was announced that a Hope Mikaelson spinoff was in the works, it has impacted the final season of The Originals. No matter what happened in New Orleans, Hope would be back in Mystic Falls to go to The Vampire Diaries’ version of Hogwarts and lead the next generation of characters in Legacies.

As The Originals is in the midst of a final stretch of episodes that revolves around saving Hope’s life, the actress who plays Hope is at Comic-Con in San Diego discussing what the future holds for her very much alive character in the spinoff Legacies.

Set two years after the events of the upcoming The Originals series finale, Hope is back at school full time in Mystic Falls. A first look trailer during Saturday’s panel at SDCC showed off the return to Mystic Falls. There was obviously a lot of Hope and also Alaric, his now teenage daughters Lizzie and Josie, and a few new faces for the spinoff. (The twins, plus Hope’s new love interest, will be introduced in episode 12 of The Originals.)

Other than Hope, there is only one other member of the Mikaelson family who makes an appearance in the footage from Legacies, Elijah. Klaus is nowhere to be seen, and whenever Klaus’ future was brought up during the Comic-Con panel, Legacies creator Julie Plec was quick to avoid the question.

Given the direction that The Originals is heading in as it nears the finale, a common theory is that either Klaus or Elijah will sacrifice themselves to save Hope. Taking a page from The Vampire Diaries‘ series finale, Klaus will intend to sacrifice himself, but Elijah will take his place at the last second. This would be Elijah’s way of atoning for the role he played in Hayley’s death.

However, thanks to the Legacies trailer, it has been revealed that Elijah will, in fact, survive. And it was confirmed during the panel that Elijah will appear in present day Mystic Falls. Matt Davis even wants a bromance to start between Alaric and Elijah.

So, it looks like Klaus will make the ultimate sacrifice to save his child. Maybe feeling responsible for both her parents’ deaths is what has Hope questioning if she is the hero or villain of her own series. Or, maybe this is just diving too far into the meaning of a brief scene in a trailer. Perhaps Klaus is alive and well and is simply traveling the world with Caroline.

In addition to its connection to The Originals‘ final season, there were of course many details about what is in store for Legacies this fall. Lets start with some math; Legacies takes place two years after the end of The Originals, making Hope 17. It picks up 12 years after the events of The Vampire Diaries, as Lizzie and Josie were three then and are 15 in Legacies.

With the new series being set in Mystic Falls, there will be many references to TVD characters, even if they don’t appear on screen. This includes a look at the front of Dr. Elena’s family practice in town. Speaking of Elena, Plec confirmed that Daman and Elena have kids now.

As for TVD characters appearing on screen, Sheriff Matt Donovan (Zach Roerig) will be in the series premiere of Legacies on Oct. 25 on The CW.
