UFC 231 takes its first big hit with featherweight Mirsad Bektic out of his fight against Renato Moicano.
UFC 231 is temporarily down a fight.
According to Nolan King of FloCombat, UFC featherweight Mirsad Bektic is out of his scheduled fight against Renato Moicano in Toronto next month. Although no official reason for Bektic’s withdrawal has been revealed at this time, a few outlets are reporting that it is due to an undisclosed injury.
Moicano is now in need of a replacement opponent, which is absolutely necessary considering he or Bektic would have been a substitute for main event fighters UFC featherweight champion Max Holloway and No. 1 contender Brian Ortega had something prevented either man from fighting. The UFC is currently looking for such replacement for Moicano.
Bektic was preparing to go for three straight wins this year after an unfortunate 2017, where he was notably knocked out by a surging Darren Elkins in the final round of their fight at UFC 209. After losing for the first time in his professional career, Bektic returned nearly a year later and defeated the likes of Godofredo Pepey and former title challenger Ricardo Lamas.
Suffering his first loss to the aforementioned Ortega in 2017, Moicano won his next two bouts with a decision over Calvin Kattar and first-round submission over Cub Swanson at UFC 223 and UFC 227 respectively.
A win for either Bektic or Moicano would have been pertinent to a potential title opportunity in the future, but it looks as though Bektic’s chance will have to wait until his eventual return.
UFC 231 is set for Dec. 8 at Scotiabank Arena in Toronto, Ontario, Canada. Alongside the main event between Holloway and Ortega, a new women’s flyweight champion will be crowned between Valentina Shevchenko and Joanna Jędrzejczyk.
