We did have a very competitive bowl mania group. I was in the top three nearly all of bowl season. How did that end up?
We had a competitive dozen people that joined the Fantasy CPR Bowl Mania group. Our winner changed to Clemson just to have a chance to win, and it worked out. Gamebreaker_boz vaulted into first place with 38 points on Clemson to pull out the narrow win. I’m happy with my third place finish, but was hoping for better considering how well I started.
Here are the final Bowl Mania standings.

Thanks to all of you that participated this year! We will be back with more next year. I will put up the group link when I open it next year so you can join in on the competition next year if you like. The more the merrier! Congratulations again to Gamebreaker_boz!
Tulane(-4.5) vs. Louisiana at Orlando: HIT! Darius Bradwell and the Tulane offense could not be stopped in this one.
Utah State(-7.5) vs. North Texas at Albuquerque: HIT! This was a rout, and I didn’t expect much different. I would have liked to see this Utah State offense in a better matchup.
Georgia Southern(-2.5) vs. Eastern Michigan at Montgomery: HIT! This was a close game, and one of the more entertaining of bowl season. I’m thankful for that half, that’s for sure!
Middle Tennessee State vs. Appalachian State(-6.5) at New Orleans: HIT! I actually lowered the bet because of the departing coach, but it didn’t matter. The better team won here, and looked really good doing it.
Arizona State vs. Fresno State(-4.5) at Las Vegas: HIT! I know people said not to go against Herm Edwards, but the talent discrepancy was pretty big here. Arizona State really had no chance without N’Keal Harry.
UAB(-2.5) vs. Northern Illinois at Boca Raton: HIT! As you can see by my wager, I wasn’t expecting a blowout, especially against that NIU defense. This just capped off a very special season for UAB. You can’t make this stuff up!
San Diego State vs. Ohio(-2.5) at Frisco: HIT! I knew the SDSU offense would struggle, but I never dreamed they would get shut out.
Marshall(-2.5) at South Florida: HIT! Easy money. USF hasn’t looked good in months!
Florida International vs. Toledo(-6.5) at Nassau: MISS! My first miss, and it was a bad one. As usual, the Bahamas Bowl was a good game down to the wire yet again.
Western Michigan vs. BYU(-12.5): HIT! Easy money here too. BYU freshman QB Zach Wilson had a perfect game. Yes, they are possible in football and almost as rare. Wilson was 18-18 through the air for 317 yards and four touchdowns!
Memphis(-3.5) vs. Wake Forest at Birmingham: HIT! Wake was riding high coming into this one, but Memphis didn’t just give it to them.
Houston vs. Army(-6.5) at Fort Worth: HIT! This was the easiest money of the bowls. Now, I didn’t expect Army to drop 70, but I did expect half of that, which would have felt like 70 for Houston.
Buffalo(-1.5) vs. Troy at Mobile: HIT! This was practically a home game for Troy. You have to pay attention to stuff like that in bowl games. Of course, that didn’t help me in the final game of the first weekend.
Louisiana Tech(-1.5) at Hawaii: MISS! The Bulldogs really enjoyed their trip to the Islands. Not only did they get some R&R in paradise, they walloped the home team while they were there.
ServPro First Responder Bowl: Ha! The joke’s on us! How on earth does the first ever bowl cancellation happen in this day and age?
Minnesota vs. Georgia Tech(-5.5) at Detroit: HIT! I really thought that Georgia Tech would win one for Paul Johnson. Instead they got blown off the field. How dangerous is this Minnesota team going to be next year? Ibrahim is going to be one of the best backs in college.
California(-1.5) vs. TCU at Phoenix: HIT!I was right about this being an ugly game. It may have been the worst I watched all season. 17 total points, nine total turnovers. If you made it through, you probably had to have something else going on to keep you occupied like I did.
Temple(-3.5) vs. Duke at Shreveport: MISS! Wow, Daniel Jones put on a hell of a show in his last college game. He put up five touchdowns on a decent Temple defense.
Miami(FL)(-3.5) vs. Wisconsin at New York City: HIT! Miami had no answer for Jonathan Taylor we still get one more year of watching this great back before he’s off to the NFL. Can the rest of Wisconsin improve enough to send him out in style?
Baylor vs. Vanderbilt(-4.5) at Houston: MISS! I didn’t see this coming, especially without Jalen Hurd available for the Bears. Not many offenses were able to do that to Vanderbilt this year.
Purdue vs. Auburn(-3.5) at Nashville: MISS! You can say this for Auburn: they finally showed up in one game this year. Is it enough to keep Malzahn on the sidelines? It is for now, but I’m betting his leash is pretty short.
West Virginia vs. Syracuse(-1.5) at Orlando: MISS! It’s so hard to pick a team that has a QB that didn’t really play all year. There was a reason that I only had one point on this one. I knew better, but I let the Orange defensive shortcomings fool me.
Iowa State vs. Washington State(-3.5) at San Antonio: HIT! I had this game circled as one of the ones I really wanted to watch (not that I didn’t watch them all anyway). It didn’t disappoint. When the dust settled, Washington State had the Pac 12’s first bowl win in 367 days. They didn’t have to wait that long for the next one.
Florida vs. Michigan(-6.5) at Atlanta: HIT! I would have missed the over/under pick, but I nailed this one, and it really wasn’t tough. The only big game Michigan has shown up for under Harbaugh is the Michigan State game. How does he still have a job? 0-4 against Ohio State, including allowing the most points ever to the Buckeye in a game where Michigan went in with an inside track for the playoffs. Then this disaster against Florida.
South Carolina(-5.5) vs. Virginia at Charlotte: HIT! The Virginia defense got the job done here, shutting out an offense that was lost without Deebo Samuel.
Arkansas State vs. Nevada at Tucson: HIT! This was a very entertaining game as well, but much lower scoring than I thought. Nevada pulled out the win in overtime to keep my streak alive.
Notre Dame vs. Clemson(-12.5) at Jerry World: MISS! Notre Dame’s defense looked good for a while, but the second half was all Clemson.
Oklahoma vs. Alabama(-14.5) at Miami: HIT! I shouldn’t have got a win in this one. Alabama was up 28-0 early in the second quarter. Oklahoma didn’t know what hit them, and Alabama just got bored. I was disappointed with the lack of defense, but Alabama’s defense did well holding the offense down early on and every time Oklahoma tried to get back in it.
Cincinnati(-6.5) vs. Virginia Tech at Annapolis: MISS! The better team won, but didn’t cover. I was impressed with how the Hokies moved the ball on a pretty tough Cincinnati defense.
Stanford(-4.5) vs. Pittsburgh at El Paso: HIT! The Pac 12 got their next bowl win. Guess what? It wasn’t their last! I honestly did expect a Pitt outright win though.
Michigan State vs. Oregon(-1.5) at Santa Clara: MISS! This was a horrible game. The worst part is that I lost by that damn half!
Missouri(-8.5) vs. Oklahoma State at Memphis: MISS! I’m not all that surprised that Missouri didn’t cover, but I am a little surprised that they lost outright. The Tigers had no answer for Chuba Hubbard. The Big 12(10) is going to feel that pain next year.
North Carolina State vs. Texas A&M(-6.5) at Jacksonville: HIT! I had a feeling that this was pretty low.
Northwestern vs. Utah(-7.5) at San Diego: HIT! It doesn’t happen often, but Vegas was fooled by Northwestern’s poor showing against the Buckeyes. Utah was too beaten up to hang here, let alone win by more than a touchdown.
Mississippi State(-6.5) vs. Iowa at Tampa: MISS! I was more surprised by the 49 combined points in what was supposed to be a defensive game than I was by Iowa winning.
LSU(-7.5) vs Central Florida at Glendale: HIT! UCF came out swinging, but it was too much Joe Burrow for the Tigers. I really thought it would be the run game that won this for LSU, but Burrow came up with his best game of the season.
Kentucky vs. Penn State(-6.5) at Orlando: HIT! Hey, Kentucky was money in Florida this year! I called Kentucky straight up because I didn’t think Penn State could stop Snell. That’s pretty much how it went.
Washington vs. Ohio State(-6.5) at Pasadena: HIT! I was surprised that the Washington defense held this offense to 29 points and scoreless in the fourth quarter. This game wasn’t nearly as close as the score suggested.
Texas vs. Georgia(-12.5) at New Orleans: HIT! Reader Danny Overstreet was gracious enough to reach out to me about a couple of errors I made in the article. I hinted that Jake Fromm had regressed from last year, but Danny pointed out that Fromm had the highest completion percentage in Georgia history this year. There have been some good quarterbacks coming through Athens like Matt Stafford and Aaron Murray. Fromm was better than both percentage wise. Fromm threw for about 100 less yards, but he had three more touchdown passes and increased his QB rating 15.7 points.
Mr. Overstreet also pointed out the lack of big play receivers. That was part of it, but Georgia also got some playing time to Fields when the games got out of hand. Thank you for pointing that out!
Clemson vs. Alabama(-5.5) at Santa Clara: MISS! This is why they play the games. I never thought I would see Alabama get blown off the field, but that is exactly what happened here.
I had my best bowl season ever, hitting 27 out of the 39. I did miss the Army-Navy game (though I wouldn’t have if I made my pick on Saturday morning) to put me at 27-13.
I did finish the season at 395-383, putting me at 50.8% on the season. I’m happy to be above .500, but I didn’t quite hit my 55% goal. How did my betting go? I’m pretty sure I have something in the bank after this!
This week’s totals follow the number. The season totals are in parentheses.
1. 2-1 (57-54) = 3
2. 9-1 (155-136) = 38
3. 6-2 (109-102) = 21
4. 7-5 (48-54) = -24
5. 3-3(26-31) = -25
I gained back everything I managed to lose in conference Championship week and then some. I won 37 betting points on the bowls to give me 13 points to the black on the season. Not only that, I got back to zero after four seasons of betting points. I lost a lot in the 2016 season, but I’ve finally paid that off. There is no more juice. The 2019 season will start at precisely zero.
