Conor McGregor, Tony Ferguson trade barbs on Twitter

Two of the UFC’s premier lightweights are having a go at each other on social media.

With current lightweight champion Khabib Nurmagomedov suspended and Max Holloway moving up a division to take on Dustin Poirier for the interim title, the lightweight division is in flux. Possibly shooting his shot for a big payday, Tony Ferguson, currently on an 11 fight win streak, used Twitter to hurl an insult at the former two-division champion, Conor McGregor.

“No Sauce Mcnuggets” [Conor McGregor] Just a replica of a former self he used to be,” Ferguson wrote. “I’ve got a solid right hand to test that chin of his. How sweet it is, Tiramisu Tuesday.”

The tweet elicited a response from McGregor, who said, “If we have the ability to go back, Tony. Then we have the ability to go forward again. I wish you well and am praying for you as a fellow colleague. Respect to my Paradigm familia. Yours sincerely, Burger King.”

McGregor’s is, of course, referencing the fact that both men are represented by Paradigm Sports Management.

Ferguson and McGregor were both seen in action at the record-breaking UFC 229 in October 2018. Ferguson took on Anthony Pettis in the event’s co-main event and walked away with a unanimous decision victory and a Fight of the Night bonus.

McGregor attempted to regain his lightweight title from Nurmagomedov but was dominated en route to being submitted in the fourth round.

Ferguson was allegedly offered a chance to fight for the interim title but turned it down. His unwillingness to accept the bout is likely due to having once been crowned as the interim champion and being passed over for his shot after a freak knee injury forced him from a fight against Nurmagomedov back at UFC 223.

Many have wondered if Ferguson and McGregor would ever fight each other, especially with the same management team and while it seems unlikely … only time will tell.
