Bracketology: Indiana and 5 bubble teams who helped their cause this weekend with big upsets
4. Georgetown
The Hoyas haven’t been in the bubble mix for most of the year, but Patrick Ewing’s squad has come on strong down the stretch. Georgetown has won three of their last four games, including a signature win over Villanova, but Saturday’s effort against fellow bubble team Seton Hall was particularly impressive.
The Pirates are a slumping team, but they are a dangerous one with a win over Kentucky on their resume, and the game ended up being a double-overtime thriller. The Hoyas outlasted Seton Hall 77-71 to improve to 8-8 in Big East play, pulling into a three-way tie with St. John’s and Xavier with a week left in the regular season.
Georgetown’s overall resume isn’t great thanks to a pile of bad losses (Loyola Marymount, SMU, and getting swept by Creighton), but their 18-11 record looks a lot more palatable than Indiana’s 15-14 mark. The Hoyas have a pair of games this week, a road trip to plucky DePaul and a home date with Marquette on Senior Day.
Beating DePaul is a must for Georgetown, which can’t absorb another bad loss at this point, but if they clear that hurdle the game against Marquette is a massive opportunity to add a marquee victory to their resume. The Golden Eagles have been the Big East’s best team all year, and picking up a win there would bring Georgetown to 20-11 heading into the conference tournament.
Doing that, along with avoiding an ugly loss in New York next week, could make the Hoyas’ win over Seton Hall a potential springboard to the NCAA Tournament.
