UFC 236: Dustin Poirier tops Max Holloway in ultimate slugfest

UFC 236: Dustin Poirier tops Max Holloway on judges score cards in ultimate slugfest on Saturday.

Atlanta, GA– Dustin Poirier defeated Max Holloway via unanimous decision (49-46 x3), at UFC 236 on Saturday, April 13, 2019, live from the State Farm Arena in Atlanta, GA. With this win, he becomes the interim lightweight champion and will be next in line to face undisputed champion, Khabib Nurmagomedov.

“I felt like the fight was slipping away, but I dug deep,” Poirier said after the fight. “Right now I’m the champ.”

Round 1

Poirier comes out swinging but the featherweight champion isn’t bothered and they trade light jabs to size each other up in the first moments of the round. Poirier lands a beautiful left that wobbles Holloway and then Holloway fires back and for a moment it looks like the fight could be stopped on both ends. Poirier unloads on Holloway who is trapped against the cage but Holloway refuses to go down. Poirier keeps unleashing strikes and now Holloway takes back control. Not for long, Poirier gets him against the fence again. They move to the center where they trade strikes, now Holloway is back in control. Poirier lands a nasty hook and drops Holloway who bounces right back to his feet. Less than a minute left and they trade strikes in the center. Holloway grabbing his eye at one point then pouncing on Poirier. They end the round on their feet trading blows.

Round 2

They go right back to the center of the cage. The crowd begins to chant “Holloway” as he begins to light up Poirier to begin the second round. Poirier lands a jab and Holloway eggs him on for more. They trade in the center of the Octagon again this time though it’s Holloway who is getting the better of the exchanges. Holloway lands a massive kick to the body of Poirier who stumbles. Poirier comes right back and nearly drops Holloway who is showing wear on his face already. They trade in the center to end the round.

Round 3

The third round begins like the first two. Striking in the center of the Octagon with both men getting in good strikes on the other, but neither able to finish. The crowd begins to chant “Poirier” as the striking clinic continues. Holloway begins to unleash on Poirier who is losing steam here in the third round. Holloway puts Poirier against the fence for a moment before the fight goes back to the center of the cage. Poirier lands an uppercut that stuns Holloway for a moment and the fight reaches the one minute mark. They trade in the pocket. Holloway has Poirier’s neck as he’s going for a takedown attempt and the action slows. Poirier struggles for the takedown and Holloway lands huge elbows to end the round.

Round 4

They pick up right where they left off with Poirier securing the complete takedown to begin the round. They struggle back their feet where Holloway lands a massive knee to Poirier’s body against the fence. They exchange again against the fence and now the crowd is chanting “Hollowell” again. Poirier us exhausted, leaving his hands down and eating shots but he’s also landing on the featherweight champion, not giving up his claim to the lightweight title. Hollowell is bleeding badly from his face and the crowd goes absolutely wild as Poirier goes for a takedown again. They end the round on the ground just moment from what could have been a submission attempt.

Round 5

Final round. The fight in these men is not quitting. They are unstoppable. They pick right up where they left off at and the slugfest continues.  Holloway’s face is absolutely destroyed. They both trade shots non-stop it’s impossible to keep up. Poirier goes for the takedown again but Hollway gets to his feet, though still against the fence. With just under a minute left in the round, the crowd gets restless as they finally separate from the fence. The end the round swinging.

Holloway came up from the featherweight division to set his belt aside (for now) in hopes of becoming another two-division champion. He faced Poirier in a rematch six years in the making in hopes of avenging a loss 2012. In the first fight, Holloway became the youngest fighter on the UFC roster when he made his promotional debut to replace an injured Ricardo Lamas at UFC 143. Holloway lost the fight via submission in the first round.
