Fantasy Baseball 2019 Week 3 Injury Update
By Bill Pivetz
There are plenty of players on the IL but when should we expect them back in our fantasy baseball lineups?
It seems like more players are added to the IL than are coming off of it. This makes fielding a fantasy baseball team more difficult. Looking at your injured player’s player notes every day is not going to change their return time.
That’s what I’m here for. I made a list of some of the top fantasy baseball names, both pitchers and hitters, that are on the IL with some updated news regarding their status.
Some players are expected to return this week while others won’t be back until the end of the month or later. If you’ve been keeping afloat with replacements, then the return of your injured stars should push you up the standings.
Here is my week 3 injury report and updates.
Clayton Kershaw
Kershaw is making his first start of the season at home against the Reds. It’s a good matchup for him to get back into the swing of things.
After dealing with back issues over the last two seasons, Kershaw started the season on the IL with a shoulder issue. In his rehab start on April 9, he pitched six innings with Double-A Tulsa on Tuesday, giving up two earned runs on five hits while striking out six and walking none.

Based on his workload in Double-A, his fantasy owners shouldn’t expect an innings limit. Kershaw was drafted in the fourth round of my league and probably somewhere close in many others. His fantasy owners have been waiting all season for this and should get a top-15 pitcher back into their lineups.
David Robertson
The Phillies placed their closer on the 10-day IL with right elbow soreness. He pitched two scoreless innings against the Marlins on Sunday.
Despite signing a nice deal, Phillies manager Gabe Kapler hasn’t been using Robertson as the team’s closer. He has just two holds and nary a save. Expect Hector Neris and Seranthony Dominguez to get save opportunities while Robertson is out.
For those Robertson owners, he’s been providing you with decent ratios and some strikeouts. Though, his value has plummeted with the Phillies committee approach.
Gary Sanchez
The Yankees added another name to their already-long injured list. The newest member is their catcher, Gary Sanchez. Sanchez was the DH in last Tuesday’s game and was available to pinch hit on Wednesday and then placed on the IL Friday.
He is dealing with a left calf strain and is eligible to return on April 21. Kyle Higashioka was recalled and will back up Austin Romine behind the plate.
The catcher pool is already shallow and fantasy owners losing Sanchez for a week doesn’t make it easier. Hold him if you got him.
Rougned Odor
The Rangers second baseman has been off to a rough start this season. He has a .167 average with two doubles, two RBIs and a steal.
Odor found himself on the IL with a right knee sprain. He’ll be held out of game action for two weeks before being reevaluated. We won’t see Odor on the field for the rest of the month.
If you need a replacement second baseman, Brandon Lowe and Jeff McNeil are widely available.
Jeremy Jeffress
The Brewers relief pitcher made a few rehab appearances coming off a shoulder injury. Many thought he would return on Monday but he wasn’t activated in time. We could see him on Tuesday but with the success of Josh Hader and Junior Guerra, he’ll likely be eased back into game action.
Francisco Lindor
Lindor began his rehab assignment on Monday. If he doesn’t suffer another setback, we should see him on the field by the end of the month. His return should help the Indians as they are 8-7.
Aaron Hicks and Giancarlo Stanton
There is no timetable for either’s return. Just be patient.
The list keeps growing, and it’s only April 15. Let’s hope the number of injuries is reduced by the time May rolls around or fantasy baseball owners are going to be adding Triple-A players because they’re all that’s left.
