Though Atletico Madrid could never really give FC Barcelona a true challenge for La Liga’s top spot this season, Diego Simeone’s side have once again put together a fantastic campaign. They are solidly in second place, having locked up Champions League football for yet another season, and 11 points separate them from arch rivals Real Madrid in third place.

Espanyol are no cakewalk team, but Atletico should win comfortably. Superstar striker Antoine Griezmann was quiet in last week’s 1-0 win over Real Valladolid, but he was his usual, excellent self in the preceding two games with a combined two goals and one assist. On the season, Griezmann leads the team with 15 goals and nine assists. He is easily their biggest attacking threat and should have a monster game against an Espanyol defense that has surrendered 50 goals this season.

It will also be interesting to see how Alvaro Morata continues to perform during Diego Costa’s suspension, and this is a big match for him to make a splash on the stat sheet. He’s scored six goals since joining Atletico, including two in his last four with Costa suspended.

Meanwhile, with Jan Oblak in goal and center back Stefan Savic expected to play through an injury next to standout Diego Godin, Espanyol will find it difficult to score goals. Atletico have won six of their last seven with five clean sheets in that span.

The player to watch for Espanyol is striker Borja Iglesias, who has been a standout this season with a team-high 13 goals.
