Fantasy Baseball 2019 May 5: Brad Keller and Other Streamers
By Bill Pivetz
There is a lot of potential for fantasy baseball streamers, but it comes with a bit of risk as well.
The May 5 slate of starting pitchers is good if you have one of the top fantasy baseball pitchers. Outside of the top three or four names, it’s a list full of names with questionable outcomes or matchups. If you need to make up some ground in strikeouts or ratios, then you may have to take a risk on one of the following pitchers.
Going through the list, I didn’t pay attention to the home/road matchups. If I like the pitcher, their past performances and the matchup, then they went on the list. It’s too early in the season to play into the splits.
All four starting pitchers listed are available in at least 60 percent of ESPN leagues, giving fantasy baseball owners more opportunities to add at least one of these pitchers.
Julio Teheran, @MIA
Things haven’t looked good for Teheran in the win-loss department. He’s lost three straight games, but one of them was a quality start and he gave up one run too many to earn his second.

He’s had some tough matchups against the Indians, Padres and Reds. Teheran’s next matchup comes against the Marlins. He’s had at least six strikeouts in four straight games and will likely make it five in this game.
Teheran has a solid offense behind him to give him the win. As long as he can limit the walks, he’ll have a quality start as well.
Brad Keller, @DET
Keller served his five-day suspension but did not miss a start. Maybe he should have because he got rocked in back-to-back games against the Rays, 10 runs on 13 hits ans six walks across 11.1 combined innings.
Luckily, Keller will have a better matchup coming against the Tigers. He faced the Tigers last month, earning a quality start by meeting the minimum requirements. Keller doesn’t strike out many batters but limits opposing damage, especially against the AL Central.
Adam Wainwright, @CHC
The veteran is quality having a great season. In four of his last five starts, he’s earned a quality start with a 3-2 record. Wainwright has gone at least six innings in each of those games.
Wainwright has a 24:8 K:BB ratio and nine earned runs in that span. The Cubs have some star hitters in their lineup and are hitting .264 with 36 runs scored over the last week. Though, with Kris Bryant and Kyle Schwarber hitting under .240, there are holes in the lineup.
Wainwright has shown he can still pitch efficiently.
Spencer Turnbull, vs. KC
On the opposite side of Keller is Turnbull. He’s coming off a six-inning, one-run outing against the Phillies. He has two straight wins and three quality starts in his last five.
The Royals have scored 32 runs with a .233 average over the last week. If Turnbull can limit the damage as he has been over the last few weeks, those 32 runs are not a problem.
Turnbull has allowed one run over his last 17.0 innings. The only downside is the lack of strikeouts, 16 in his last four starts.
If you can downplay the negatives and focus on the positives, there is plenty of fantasy baseball value on the waiver wire. Just temper expectations and know what you need to win your matchup and you should be just fine.
