32 college football players destined to be future first round NFL Draft picks
3. Grant Delpit – Safety, LSU
What Jerry Jeudy is to the wide receiver group, Grant Delpit is to the defensive back group. Delpit has been an impact player from day one as a freshman and is comfortably in line to be the next great defensive back to come out of LSU. There is nothing Delpit can’t do on the field, and despite Greedy Williams getting most of the praise in 2018, there was no doubt that Delpit was the best player on the LSU defense.
“He can rush, cover, play man-to-man,” head coach Ed Orgeron said of Delpit, per Cody Worsham of LSU Athletics’ official site. “It’s like having three players. That’s how much he means to our defense.”
Delpit had 74 total tackles, five interceptions, nine pass deflections, and five sacks this past season.
A player like Delpit instantly upgrades your secondary and expands what a defensive coordinator can do on the back end. Safety usually isn’t a position teams like to put a high priority on in the draft, but letting Derwin James slip to the 17th pick in 2018 should have woken teams up. So expect Delpit to have his name called very early.
