Week-by-week predictions

Game 1: vs. Houston

Houston worked its way into second place in the American West Conference. While not the most prominent group of teams, they are not a guaranteed win for Oklahoma in Week 1. Plus, it’s the first test for Hurts, as all eyes will rest on him. It should result in a win, though.

Prediction: Win

Game 2: vs. South Dakota

Oklahoma will host South Dakota in its second game. Not much else to note, but a move to 2-0 is all but guaranteed here.

Prediction: Win

Game 3: at UCLA

While a non-conference opponent from a prestigious group of teams, this is not the UCLA of old. Chip Kelly might have a few talented pieces to build around, but they are not competing against Oklahoma next season. Look for another easy win.

Prediction: Win

Game 4: vs. Texas Tech

Oklahoma returns home for what’s likely an offensive shootout with Texas Tech. If Hurts can compete against another air raid unit, this should trend in the Sooners’ favor. It might be close, but make it 4-0.

Prediction: Win

Game 5: at Kansas

Kansas still sits at the Big 12’s bottom. Oklahoma will run over them and move to 5-0, just in time for the Red River Rivalry Game.

Prediction: Win

Game 6: at Texas

Welcome, Red River Rivalry Game. It is maybe the most anticipated college football game each season. No matter where Texas or Oklahoma stands, it is always a fun and close matchup. 2018 went to the Longhorns, and while this is always a toss-up, Tom Herman has a strong group and may snatch this one away.

Prediction: Loss

Game 7: vs. West Virginia

West Virginia’s quality under a new head coach and quarterback will be an early Big 12 storyline to follow, but by Oklahoma’s seventh game, that should be decided. Still, after a loss that broke a perfect record, the Sooners will win this follow-up game.

Prediction: Win

Game 8: at Kansas State

Oklahoma only defeated Kansas State by a touchdown in 2018, with a surprise offensive output from a team more known for its defense. However, look for their 2019 matchup to have a wider result, even if on the road.

Prediction: Win

Game 9: vs. Iowa State

Iowa State has proved to be a threat to Oklahoma in recent seasons, so this game hardly has a pre-determined winner. It could be low scoring and close or high scoring and neck and neck the whole ride. This is potentially another tight matchup for the Sooners, but they should walk away with a third consecutive victory.

Prediction: Win

Game 10: at Baylor

Baylor took Oklahoma to the final minutes in 2017 but lost by 33 in 2018. Their next matchup could result in more of the same, especially as Matt Rhule’s teams did not defeat upper Big 12 competition last season. Another blowout may be in the cards.

Prediction: Win

Game 11: vs. TCU

A team like Texas is not the elite, explosive offense of Oklahoma, so they may have a tighter game. The Sooners should not, depending on how far along Hurts is in his lone Norman, OK season. This run looks quite similar to the events of 2018.

Prediction: Win

Game 12: at Oklahoma State

Bedlam will close the Big 12 season. It is high scoring, features a ton of offense and no defense. Finding a sack or a deflected pass is like finding a needle in a haystack. This is also a test for Oklahoma to potentially stay ahead of Texas in the conference standings, and while a close game is ahead, they should make this the 11th victory of the season.

Prediction: Win

Final Record: 11-1 (8-1 in the Big 12)
