Here are the best Twitter reactions to the main event of UFC Stockholm between Alexander Gustafsson and Anthony Smith.
Anthony Smith silenced the Swedish crowd after finishing Alexander Gustafsson in the main event of UFC Stockholm.
In his last outing, Gustafsson met with a familiar foe in current light heavyweight champion Jon Jones for the then-vacant championship in the main event of UFC 232. Gustafsson and Jones first met in September 2013 at UFC 165, where Gustafsson nearly handed Jones his first loss in four years after five rounds of fighting.
The rematch went much differently, with Jones being the aggressor from the onset of the fight. Eventually, Jones was able to finish Gustafsson by way of technical knockout in the third round. The loss to Jones snapped a two-fight win streak for Gustafsson.
In hopes of a career reset, Gustafsson welcomed a fight with the contender turned title challenger in Smith.
Smith rose up the light heavyweight rankings in a rather quick, yet impressive fashion earning wins over former and potential champions. After brutally knocking out Rashad Evans and Mauricio ‘Shogun’ Rua, Smith took on fellow contender Volkan Oezdemir in the main event of UFC Fight Night: Volkan vs. Smith.
Despite it being labeled a tough test, Smith handled the fight well and got the rear-naked choke finish in the third round. Now on a three-fight win streak, Smith was poised to challenge for the championship against Jones at UFC 235. Smith would lose to Jones by way of unanimous decision and looked to take a break from competition before getting the call to face Gustafsson.
In the fourth round, Smith found his way to Gustafsson’s back and was able to sink in the rear-naked choke.
