How many Tonys is Network nominated for? Featuring a stunning performance from Bryan Cranston, the stage version of the Academy Award-winning movie is one of the more high-profile entries into the 2019 Tony Awards.

The play has had an impressive box office haul, and Cranston’s performance in particular has been praised as one of the best of the Broadway season. However, Network didn’t quite rake in as many Tony nominations as it could have. It has five, which is a sizable number but still less than several other shows.

Shocking no one, Bryan Cranston is a nominee for Best Performance by an Actor in a Leading Role in a Play for his work as wayward news anchorman Howard Beale. After already having won once when he starred in All The Way, Cranston has to be considered the favorite in that category given an even better performance this time around.

Unfortunately he’s the only cast member who earned a Tony nomination. The rest of the nods for Network were amongst the crew: Best Direction of a Play (Ivo van Hove), Best Scenic Design (Jan Versweyveld), Best Lighting Design (a joint nomination for Versweyveld and Tal Yarden), and then Best Sound Design (Eric Sleichim).

While the play should snag at least one win at the 2019 Tony Awards, the lack of a nomination for Best Play, as well as overlooking the rest of the production’s impressive cast, are snubs that would send Howard Beale into another rage. Especially with the show closing just days after the Tonys are handed out, it’s too bad Network wasn’t the smash hit critically that it was amongst viewers.
