Should we be worried about Victor Strand dying soon on Fear the Walking Dead?

Actor Colman Domingo says he’s “prepared” to go at any time. Does this mean the end of Victor Strand?

In addition to the fascinating reunion between Morgan and Dwight, Fear the Walking Dead season 5 episode 3 also treated fans to a reunion between Victor Strand (Colman Domingo) and Daniel Salazar (Ruben Blades). Once Strand sought out Salazar at the end of episode 2, you weren’t sure how it was going to transpire, considering that the last time the two saw each other, Strand shot a bullet into Salazar’s face.

The reunion between the two rivals at first seemed cautiously cordial, but eventually went south when Salazar explained that he would never trust Strand, refused to help him as a result, and chucked him into the dangerous walker-strewn streets in the middle of the night.

Still, it was a pleasure seeing these two charismatic actors share the screen again. FTWD has done a terrific job of swapping out characters who were slowing down the series (Madison, the weak-willed Travis, Nick), injecting new blood (the wonderful John Dorie, June, Althea), bridging crossover characters (Morgan and now Dwight), while keeping original cast members who have continued to captivate. The shifty-turned-heroic Strand and the Salvadoran secret-agent-father-who-lost-his-family Salazar, whose ability to read right through people has made him the ultimate survivor, are two examples of the kind of characters that rose out of the original cast member pack. The two actors clearly enjoyed working together again as well.

“I know that we’re at each others throats and there’s a lot of tension like somebody’s going to shoot each other, shoot the other in the face, but Ruben and I we love each other,” Domingo said in an interview with Comicbook.com. “There’s such a bromance there, and we love sparring and playing off each other because I think that he’s quick witted and funny and dark. I don’t know. I love the fact that we can go toe-to-toe and we never know where the other will go. It’s exciting. He’s a great dance partner.”

The third episode was also directed by Domingo. The actor debuted as a director in the FTWD universe back in season 4. This time around, however, Domingo grappled with more complex action sequences and the responsibility for handling Dwight’s crossover introduction.

“I think I knew what I was getting myself into, but this episode was even more stunts and special effects and visual effects,” the actor/director said in the Comicbook.com interview. One of those effective stunts included setting up the San Antonia split, the cool bit where Dwight held up an ax so Dorie could split one bullet to take out two walkers. Some thought it was campy, but I’m a huge Clint Eastwood fan (as well as John Dorie fan) so it worked for me.”

Doming also spoke about setting up Dwight’s big entrance.

“I didn’t think of it as his big entrance in any way. I just thought, ‘Oh, this is we have to figure out how we set him up.’ I love the idea of setting him up as sort of this mystery man, and then we reveal him, and then he’s still quiet. Even the way we stage him is just his head’s down, and I like that he’s almost obscure even when he has his hand up with the gun towards Dorie. Where people are like, “Wait, is that … It is. Wait.” I wanted a little bit of that.”

Does this mean that Colman Domingo will take on more directing in the future? And does that mean that his character will go by the chopping block, like so many others in both Walking Dead shows? Domingo was asked if he would be nervous about his character getting killed off.

“To be honest no. Not at all. Honestly, I feel like I’m so prepared that if they told me that I was going to be bitten this season or next season, I think I would be okay. To be perfectly honest, I think it’s not a fear that I have anymore. I think, you know, the nature of storytelling, and you feel like whatever tells the best story. I think we’re all actors who know that we’ll work again and again, and it’s just the nature of the show. I think you want to really give it up to be a part of that. I think Strand has a lot more story to tell, but I think that who knows. If they decided something else, I think cool.”

Hopefully, Victor Strand is staying put for now, because he’s still one of the fascinating characters on the show.
