UFC Minneapolis: Dalcha Lungiambula outwrestles, finishes Dequan Townsend in UFC debut

Dalcha Lungiambula wins a battle of UFC debuting fighters, outworking over Dequan Townsend on the ground before finishing him off in the third round of their UFC Minneapolis bout.

Dalcha Lungiambula defeated Dequan Townsend via TKO, Round 3 – 0:42 at UFC Minneapolis on June 29, 2019, live from Target Center in Minneapolis, MN.

Both fighters were making their UFC debuts in this bout, with both winning gold across regional promotions. Lungiambula was completely dominant on the ground, with Townsend struggling to get to his feet a few times during the fight. While there was quite a bit of inaction during the second, “Dalcha Champion” made up for it by dropping Townsend with a hard one-two that brought about the finish.

“I feel good,” Lungiambula said in his post-fight interview. “Hard work always pays [off]. Thank you God, and I thank the UFC for this opportunity. Thank you to my fans. Thank you, Africa, for believing in me!”

Here’s how the fight played out:

Round 1

The two touch gloves and circle up in the center of the Octagon. Both men feeling each other out, being patient and not throwing until Townsend landed a hard, fast left jab. Kick to the leg by Townsend, followed by one to the body. Lungiambula lands a right hand but almost gets caught coming in. One-two by Lungiambula. Left hand by Lungiambula, but he gets caught up and trips while trying to pressure Townsend. Lungiambula, however, does get Townsend up against the fence. Lungiambula attempts to get a throw but Townsend counters and the fight gets right back into a clinch on the cage wall. Each fighter lands a knee. Lungiambula gets a trip and takes Townsend down. Townsend trying to get up but Lungiambula has him pinned. Lungiambula, upon losing Townsend, scores another big takedown. Townsend locks Lungiambula in his guard. Townsend attempted to get an armbar from the bottom but Lungiambula is able to avoid it.

Round 2

Townsend misses a left and a big overhand right. Jab by Townsend. Lungiambula gets inside and pressures Townsend into retreat before taking him back down to the mat. Lungiambula gets Townsend pinned against the wall yet again, getting a back clinch. Townsend gets to his feet but is easily dragged back to the floor by Lungiambula. Lungiambula transitions into topside control and then gets into partial mount. Townsend attempting to control Lungiambula’s arms and lock him in guard, but he cannot get back to his feet. Two minutes to go in the round. Not much going on as the seconds tick away, and the referee is (for some reason) not standing these guys up. Small elbow inside by Lungiambula, who at this point has maintained top position time through a total of about six minutes in this fight. Still no warning from the referee in the final seconds. Townsend throwing a couple of strikes and the referee finally stands them back up. As the 10-second clap comes in, Townsend comes in with a jumping knee and each man misses a big punch before the horn.

Round 3

Townsend working the jab and missing a big strike again to start the round. Lungiambula throws two big power shots and drops Townsend. Lungiambula jumps and scrambles on top of him and lets his hands fly with ground-and-pound until the referee steps in.

Lungiambula enters after a successful run in the Extreme Fighting Championship (EFC) promotion in Africa, where he was a champ-champ. Lungiambula, who entered tonight on a five-fight win streak and nine wins in 10 pro bouts, won the interim EFC light heavyweight title in 2016, unified the title in 2017, and won the African promotion’s heavyweight title in 2018.

Townsend, who made his professional MMA debut in 2012, won championships in three different weight classes — light heavyweight, welterweight and middleweight. Townsend entered this fight off back-to-back wins and six wins in his last seven fights.
