Best Unsigned NFL Free Agents with Fantasy Potential

Every year, there are NFL free agents who wind up not signing until late the summer or even after the season starts that turn out to have a significant impact on their new teams and your fantasy teams.

The best example this past season was Running Back CJ Anderson. He signed with the Rams just before fantasy championship weekend. On championship weekend, he ran for 167 yards and a touchdown helping many of the fantasy owners savvy enough to start him, win championships.

Wide Receiver Dontrelle Inman, now with the Patriots, signed with the Colts in mid-season, and had four games with 10 or more fantasy points. Quarterback Matt Barkley signed with the Bills in October and had a decent 17 fantasy points in his only start. These examples prove veteran NFL players who are free agents at this late stage still go on to make fantasy impact. Teams, like the Kansas City Chiefs would be wise to add depth before training camp.

Here’s a list of top available NFL free agents and what teams are the best fit in order for them to make a fantasy impact.

Quarterbacks

1. Josh McCown – The savvy veteran just retired and signed with ESPN, but he’s left retirement before. Just two years ago, he threw for nearly 3,000 yards and had a 2-1 TD to INT ratio. His value would be felt more in the QB room and on the sideline mentoring than it would be on the field.

Best Fit – Buffalo Bills

Josh Allen, at least from a fantasy prospective, was a revelation for the Bills. But his accuracy and decision-making show his still has a lot to learn. McCown would be the perfect replacement and an upgrade over the recently retired Derek Anderson.

2. Brock Osweiler – He has never lived up to the enormous and regrettable contract that the Texans signed him to in 2016, but he’s a solid backup. In Miami last year, he threw for 380 yards and 3 tds in his first start versus a very good Bears defense.

Best Fit – Dallas Cowboys

Right now, the unproven Cooper Rush is the backup to Dak Prescott. He has 2 career passing yards in the NFL. If Dallas wants to stay a playoff and Super Bowl contender, they need more depth at Quarterback.

3. Sam Bradford – His disastrous 2018 season with the Cardinals aside. He led the NFL in completion percentage in 2016 and was well on his way to doing the same in 2017 before injuries struck yet again.

Best Fit – Carolina Panthers

Yes they have Rookie Will Grier, but if he’s not ready, they need an accurate backup who can get the ball in the short and intermediate routes to their best weapons, RB Christian McCaffery and TE Greg Olsen.
