Karl Roberson spoiled the promotional debut of Wellington Turman with a split decision victory.

Karl Roberson defeated Wellington Turman via split decision (29-28, 28-29, 29-28) at UFC Sacramento on Saturday, July 13, 2019, live from the Golden 1 Center in Sacramento, CA.

Roberson eeked out a nip-tuck decision over grappling specialist Turman in a fight that saw its fair share of ground exchanges.

“This one was a hard one, I had to push through… I was 0-2 against Brazilians, I wasn’t coming here to lose, baby,” said a happy Roberson following his close decision victory.

Here’s how the whole fight played out.

Round 1

Turman opened the round with a blitz into the clinch, then the body lock, and dragged Roberson to the mat. Two minutes into the round, Roberson was able to reverse position into Turman’s guard. As the ground specialist, Turman was active with regular submission attempts from his back, but Roberson smartly defended. With 45 seconds remaining, Roberson moves to half guard where he peppered Turman with strikes.

FanSided scored the round 10-9 Roberson.

Round 2

The round began with Roberson pressuring, and he landed a big body kick which appeared to briefly hurt Turman. Despite his success with strikes, Roberson moved into the clinch. After some jockeying for position, Turman was able to gain control of the clinch and began hunting for Roberson’s back from a standing position. With two minutes remaining in the round, Turman earned a takedown, and appeared to be the fresher fighter. Turman briefly worked his way to Roberson’s back, but Roberson was able to reverse position into Turman’s closed guard, where the round ended.

FanSided scored the round 10-9 Turman, and 19-19 overall.

Round 3

With both fighters showing fatigue, Roberson again started the round with sharp strikes, but immediately moved the clinch. Turman quickly controlled the position, dragged Roberson to the ground, and moved into a tight mount position. With a tired Roberson under him, Turman nearly sunk in a rear naked choke. Turman remained relentless with his ground attack, transitioning between mount and back position. With just thirty seconds remaining, Roberson reversed position and landed a few big ground strikes.

FanSided scored the round 10-9 Turman, and 29-28 Turman overall.

Coming into the bout, Roberson had alternated wins and losses over his last four bouts. He last fought in January 2019 in a losing effort at light heavyweight against Glover Texeira.

Turman was making his promotional debut in this fight. The Brazilian ground specialist was riding a four-fight win streak.
