UFC Newark: Antonina Shevchenko secures first submission, puts Lucie Pudilova to sleep

Antonina Shevchenko overcame some early adversity to earn a second-round submission victory over Lucie Pudilova.

Antonina Shevchenko defeated Lucie Pudilova via submission (rear naked choke), Round 2 – 1:20 at UFC Newark on Saturday, Aug. 3, 2019, live from the Prudential Center in Newark, New Jersey.

Despite dealing with some early adversity by way of a big cut, Shevchenko dominated Pudilova on the mat on her way to her first career submission victory.

“I didn’t feel the elbow very hard, but I did of course feel blood,” said Shevchenko when asked about a big cut over her left eye. “I would like to come back as soon as my cut heals,” she said. “Every fight gives me motivation, loss or win.”

Here’s how the whole fight played out.

Round 1

With Shevchenko the southpaw and Pudilova the orthodox fighter, Pudilova rushed to the clinch early, but Shevchenko made her pay with a number of knees to the body. Shevchenko controlled the clinch for nearly two minutes before the referee separated the fighters following an accidental groin strike. On the restart, Pudilova immediately lunged forward to the clinch. Shevchenko controlled the clinch for about a minute, but Pudilova landed a pair of huge elbows, one of which cut Shevchenko in a big way. Pudilova followed Shevchenko to the mat, where Shevchenko locked in what seemed to be a perfect armbar, but Pudilova somehow escaped.

Round 2

Round two began with Pudilova again lunging forward aggressively for the clinch. About a minute into the round, Pudilova earns the takedown but Shevchenko lands on Pudilova’s back with a sunk in choke. Pudilova went belly down, and Shevchenko put her to sleep with an impressive submission win.

Shevchenko — the older sister to UFC flyweight champ Valentina Shevchenko — came into this fight following an April loss to perennial contender Roxanne Modefferi.

Pudilova was riding a two-fight losing streak, with losses to Irene Aldana and Liz Carmouche. This was her second consecutive fight in the UFC’s flyweight division.
