The first game of the Champions League group stage kick off on Tuesday, with Inter Milan hosting Slavia Prague at the San Siro. Inter finished fourth in Serie A last season but have gotten off to a strong start this season after major changes in the summer. Slavia Prague won the Czech league last season and qualified for the Champions League for the second time in club history.
After watching Juventus win their eighth straight Serie A title, Inter made significant changes over the summer. Inter hired former Juventus and Italy manager Antonio Conte to help the club capture its first Serie A title in a decade. Conte finally got his man, signing Romelu Lukaku after years of trying to get the Belgian striker. Lukaku will lead the attack on Tuesday. At the back, Inter have a strong back three with Milan Skriniar, Stefan de Vrij and Diego Godin. After three games, Inter are first in Serie A with a perfect record and are expected to easily beat Slavia Prague on Tuesday.
Slavia Prague are easily the smallest club to qualify for the Champions League. The Czech league champion does not receive an automatic bid, and the winner has to go through the qualifying rounds. Since 2000, Slavia Prague have gone through the qualifying rounds 10 times but have only made it into the group stage twice. Just getting into the group stage is a major accomplishment.
Unfortunately for Slavia Prague, they were drawn into the group of death, with Inter, Borussia Dortmund and Barcelona. The Czech enter the tournament know that they will finish last in the group but will go out, compete and try to prove something to the European giants in their group. Tomas Soucek will be one of the players to watch for Slavia Prague. Soucek finished last season with 18 goals and nine assists last year.
