Fear the Walking Dead’s “End of the Line” lived up to its name when the last couple of minutes took an unexpected turn and concluded in shocking fashion.

This recap contains spoilers for Fear the Walking Dead Season 5 Episode 16.

It appeared momentarily Fear the Walking Dead’s fifth season would end in the TWD staple manner of separating the good guys only to reunite them all on a later date — until Virginia pulled out a pistol and shot Morgan, leaving him bleeding out viciously. She’d waited until the rest of Morgan’s convoy had boarded on her trucks and military-style vehicles, leaving him with no backup.

Morgan attempted to hit the gun out of Virginia’s hand but was too late to stop the shot. Virginia would then grab another pistol off the ground in the scramble, not realizing it was a prop gun. She pulled the trigger again without remorse, only this time point blank on a gravely injured Morgan. He looked directly in her eyes as nothing fired. Virginia decided to leave Morgan in haste as walkers descended upon the area with the parting words, “I really hope you do die!” Walkers would approach a sitting, bleeding Morgan as credits rolled, presumably signaling his death but leaving the door slightly open that he might make it through.

The entire episode teased the convoy succeeding without Virginia, even ambushing her, but it was all a set-up. Dwight had discovered horses on his walk away from the group and brought them back to the Humbug’s Gulch. This allowed the group to lead the walkers out of the Gulch into a field, where they would be used against Virginia on the road. However, when Daniel and Strand found out Luciana would be collateral damage of the walker attack, they decided to delay. The move would end up causing the whole plan to fall apart as Dwight and the rest of the group lost control of the herd during the hesitation.

There was no going back, so the convoy decided they would live how they had wanted before Virginia made it to the Humbug’s Gulch. Alicia and Wes would paint the top of a chapel where June and John Dorie finally got married. The ceremony surprisingly went through without a hitch, however, Virginia’s group would soon arrive and the mood changed. Morgan got Virginia to agree to take everyone, including the sick, and she obliged.

However, Virginia asserted her control, separating the members on different vehicles as she saw fit. This action was of course to demoralize the convoy and reduce dissension among the ranks. Grace and Morgan would admit to feeling something for each other that day after the carousel ride. Then Grace was taken away for medical care as Morgan had requested. It would turn out it was not necessarily the radiation exposure making her sick but being malnourished while pregnant.

Morgan would be the last one left waiting to board a vehicle only to discover he’d walked into a trap. He was isolated from his group with no way out. Would it be the “End of the Line?”
