Whether Gallardo could be expected to solve Barcelona’s issues with spending vast sums of money on players they don’t seem to know what to do with, or unsettling important current squad members in the pursuit of players whom the club simply can’t afford to buy, remains to be seen.

Sevilla had enjoyed a fine start to the season under new coach Julen Lopetegui and returning director of football Monchi, but successive La Liga defeats to Real Madrid and Eibar took the shine off things a little. They were impressive in beating APOEL Nicosia 1-0 in the Europa League on Thursday, even if the eventual margin of victory was narrow.
