A couple of popular welterweights are scheduled to face off in the main event of UFC Orlando in a bout that could be argued as being a must-win for either.
This main event will see former title challenger and longtime welterweight contender Stephen “Wonderboy” Thompson take on Kevin Holland.
Though Thompson is tied with Geoff Neal at the No. 6 spot in the UFC’s welterweight rankings entering this bout, he has lost four of the six bouts he’s had since 2018. He enters this fight on a two-bout losing skid, falling in unanimous decisions to both Gilbert Burns and Belal Muhammad last year.
Kevin Holland captured eyes and hearts through his five wins in 2020 (tied for the most in a calendar year in UFC history) and his seven bouts between May 2020 and April 2021 (the most of any UFC fighter ever). But things haven’t been the same since the start of 2021, where he lost to Derek Brunson and Marvin Vettori before a no-contest with Kyle Daukaus. He defeated Alex Oliveira by TKO and submitted Tim Means earlier this year, but Holland came up short in a first-round submission loss to Khamzat Chimaev in a short-notice co-main event at September’s UFC 279.
Bryan Barberena, who has won three straight and four of his last five, with Fight of the Night bonuses in three of his last four, faces former lightweight champ Rafael dos Anjos in the co-main event.
