Power ranking the NHL’s alternate jerseys for the 2019-20 season
By Kyle McKenna
7. New York Islanders
Similar to other teams on this list, the New York Islanders struggled with designing alternate jerseys over the past decade. In fact, the team has worn two different black third jerseys since 2012. Why the Islanders would ever wear a black third jersey is mind-blowing, but they finally figured it out after playing in the 2014 Stadium Series game vs. the New York Rangers at Yankee Stadium.
At first, the uniform design probably left fans speechless.
Speechless in the sense that the appearance of the sweater surprised and pleased fans to the point where they didn’t know how to react.
The modified logo stayed true to the Islanders’ roots and fans have to wonder why the “NY” logo was never utilized how it is on this sweater years in advance.
Now, this alternate is a modified version of the original Stadium Series sweater, but the subtle changes implemented were for the better.
While this jersey carries a few similarities in comparison with the team’s primary home sweater, the numbers on the back are actually different. On the home jersey, the numbers are filled in with white and outlined in orange, whereas it’s the opposite on the alternate.
The white fill-in is never a bad decision when it comes to numbers and nameplates on hockey jerseys, but the orange numbers outlined in white are a nice change of pace and pays tribute to the team’s original uniform design back in 1972.
Given the Islanders’ recent success under head coach Barry Trotz, don’t be surprised to see New York playing in an outdoor game soon and donning an orange-based jersey with a similar design to the team’s current alternate.
