5. Kenny Smith

It’s a bit of an off-the-wall kind of idea, but Kenny Smith got an interview with the Knicks the last time they had a vacancy, so we can’t completely rule it out.

Smith has zero head coaching experience at the NBA level and is more known for his time as a broadcaster with TNT and the two championships he won with the Houston Rockets as a player back in 1994 and 1995. Then again, something similar was said about Steve Kerr when he got the Golden State Warriors job, and we all know how that turned out. If you know the game, you know the game.

However, as much as giving the job to a recognizable, likable name who was born in Queens would make for a good story, the Knicks probably need a more proven hand at this point, especially with such a mismanaged roster to address. Placing that burden on a first-timer would almost be unfair.
