What does Apple’s uninspired Golden Globes debut mean for the future?
By D.J. Rivera
After a less-than-stellar performance at their first Golden Globes, the question on everyone’s mind is where does Apple TV+ go from here?
Apple TV+ went into the night with high hopes of taking home their first Golden Globe. While the odds were heavily stacked against them, Apple still felt confident they could win big.
Even CEO Tim Cook was on hand to support The Morning Show’s efforts at the Globes less than a year after premiering its first three episodes. The tech giant already shocked the world once by getting nominations in significant categories, why not cap off the story with a happy ending?
It’s not like Apple hasn’t shocked the world before by outdoing all expectations. They have had their backs against the wall several times in the past, and they have overcome some steep obstacles in their day. The company has some great comeback stories, but unfortunately for Apple TV+, its first chapter closes with sadness.
Apple was completely shut out at the awards event. The series was nominated for three Golden Globes overall, and none of the contenders were able to take home an award that evening.
The Morning Show lost to HBO’s Succession for the coveted Best Television Series Drama honor. Also, walking away with a mark in the loss column was both Reese Witherspoon and Jennifer Aniston. The two lost to Olivia Colman, who took home the award for Best Actress in a Television series Drama for her portrayal of Queen Elizabeth in Netflix’s The Crown.
Apple’s elite rookie series lost to some heavy-hitting seasoned players. Now that the dust has settled on the Globes, what does this mean for the future of Apple TV+? Where does the fledgling streaming service go from here?
When The Morning Show launched back in November, it was met with mixed reviews. But the hype train started picking up steam with every subsequent episode that was released going from possible dud to serious contender. The series’ awards nominations verified that Apple was a force to reckoned with in the streaming wars. But do the losses tarnish that achievement?
Despite losing at the Globes, the recognition from the popular awards event has undoubtedly garnered some great recognition for both The Morning Show and Apple TV+ overall. This prestigious stage allowed Apple’s streaming service to make a powerful statement and proved that they need to be much higher on everyone’s must- subscribe list. The spotlight and attention from the event could very well have a significant effect on consumers when deciding on their next binge-worthy obsession.
The impact from The Morning Show’s Golden Globe recognition will definitely be a factor for Emmys consideration as the Apple TV+ original is eligible to enter that competition this year. And the Golden Globes were really just the start of their awards run.
The Apple series will next compete at The Critics Choice awards, where Billy Crudup is nominated for Best Supporting Actor. Then at the SAG Awards Crudup, Steve Carell and Jennifer Aniston will be looking to take home honors for Best Actor, Actress, and Supporting Actor.
The SAG and Critics Choice awards aren’t as big as the Golden Globes, but when you put all the accolades together, it translates to audiences that this is something that is worth their time. And in a world where there is an abundance of choices to choose from when it comes to what viewers watch, that is a win in every sense of the word.
Those factors only further entice the public to click “subscribe.” The ripple effect from this attention leads to Apple’s other shows, Truth Be Told, See, Dickinson, Servant, and For All Mankind, as well as their promising 2020 slate of originals to garner more attention in the process. This also bodes well for The Morning Show’s highly anticipated second season.
So what exactly does Apple’s uninspired Golden Globes debut mean for the future? Absolutely nothing except for the fact that it got its first bad awards show experience out of the way. It won’t be the first time, it won’t be the last time, but one thing is for sure: Apple TV+ isn’t going anywhere anytime soon. And above all else, The Morning Show is must-see TV.
