3. A total reset

This one is probably absurdly far-fetched but that doesn’t make it any less fun to imagine. The Warriors signed Russell to an enormous deal this summer but the decision was clearly wrapped up in returning value for the about-to-depart Kevin Durant and rumors swirled almost immediately that the Warriors would look to flip him eventually. Injuries to Klay Thompson and Stephen Curry mean that Golden State hasn’t had a chance to see that trio together but this could be an interesting zag.

The Warriors don’t run a ton of pick-and-roll but Drummond is a strong finisher and lob threat who could bring a different kind of gravity to their attack. His ferocious rebounding and potential as an elbow facilitator for curls and dribble hand-offs could work in theory. It would take the Warriors consciously deciding to do things very differently but that may be coming anyway.

For Detroit, Russell is a dynamic primary ball-handler to anchor and give shape to their impending rebuild.
