The new Hunger Game prequel book will feature President Snow as its protagonist. Will this choice still make for a good story?
Regardless of where you live, expect to see some extra Snow well after winter is over this May. With the Hunger Games prequel novel set to come out on May 19, more details were finally revealed about the book, including who would be the main character. And that main character would be one Coriolanus Snow, aka President Snow.
The details on the new novel from Suzanne Collins, called The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes, were revealed by Entertainment Weekly today. With this came an excerpt from the book as well as an illustration of our young protagonist, Snow. Previously, it was only revealed that the book would take place 64 years before The Hunger Games, “starting on the morning of the reaping of the tenth Hunger Games.”
EW‘s excerpt of the book builds off of that, including a passage that starts with Snow getting one of his biggest assignments in “the Academy.” What he’s studying in the Academy is vague, but like any self-conscious student, he’s looking to keep up appearances by playing it cool as a wealthy socialite.
This day in particular, though, marks the first day in history where mentors will be assigned to tributes. The best of the best tributes (ie, the winners) usually come from Districts 1 and 2, and sometimes 4 and 11. But unfortunately for Snow, he’s left with the tribute from the worst one of them all, District 12. That, as all Hunger Games fans know, is the home of Katniss Everdeen.
As unique of a take the new novel sounds, not all fans were content with the choice of the protagonist. With the news, “President Snow” has been trending on Twitter, many of the top tweets expressing their disappointment in Collins choosing to center the novel around Snow. Some Twitter users even included lists of who they would rather see spinoffs of, including but not limited to Haymitch, Finnick, Effie and even Caesar Flickerman.
So can the novel still be a good one, despite its new main character? The Hunger Games trilogy has been a good one, and Collins proved that she’s an exceptional writer. She’s created a YA novel world that rivals Harry Potter’s Wizarding World (or at least gives it a run for its money). And few new writers have been able to capture a wide audience the way her Hunger Games books and movies have.
That said, The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes is still likely to be a well-received book, even if it’s currently getting the Joker treatment online. Though, whether President Snow was a good character to pick for the first prequel novel is definitely debatable. But with a world that has so much fascinating lore, hopefully Snow won’t be the only character we’ll get an origin story from.
Look for The Ballad of Songbirds and Snakes out May 19 wherever books are sold.
