A shot at the UFC light heavyweight championship is potentially on the line in the UFC Rio Rancho main event, which sees Corey Anderson fight Jan Blachowicz.
By hook or by crook, Jon Jones remains the UFC light heavyweight champion following UFC 247 this past weekend. Now, his next challenger may potentially be determined this weekend when Corey Anderson and Jan Blachowicz face off in the main event of UFC Rio Rancho.
This will be a rematch of their original meeting at UFC 191 over four years ago, which saw Anderson score a unanimous decision win.
Anderson enters this bout off four straight wins, and now he has the chance to get the light heavyweight title shot he’s desired for a while now. Anderson scored decision wins over Patrick Cummins, Glover Teixeira and Ilir Latifi, but the lack of finishes reportedly caused him to be passed over for a title shot. In fact, Jones reportedly chose Dominick Reyes over him for the title fight at UFC 247 this past weekend. Anderson scored a bunch of momentum, however, with a first-round finish of Johnny Walker at UFC 244.
After winning four in a row between 2017 and 2018, Blachowicz had a shot at scoring a title shot previously, but he was defeated by Thiago Santos at UFC Prague last year. He’s since rebounded with a knockout win over former UFC middleweight champion Luke Rockhold and a decision win over former Strikeforce champion Ronaldo “Jacare” Souza.
The co-main event will see Diego Sanchez, looking to rebound after a loss to Michael Chiesa, facing Michel Pereira, who looks for a second Octagon victory in his third UFC appearance.
Also competing on the main card will be former flyweight title challenger Ray Borg, Lando Vannata and Yancy Medeiros. The prelims, meanwhile, will feature the likes of Tim Means, John Dodson, Jim Miller and Merab Dvalishvili.
UFC Rio Rancho will also feature the husband-and-wife duo of Mark and Montana De La Rosa, who become the first married couple to share the Octagon together on the same evening. Mark competes against Raulian Paiva on the prelims, while Montana competes on the main card against Mara Romero Borella.
This article will preview the six main card bouts of UFC Rio Rancho and attempt to pick a winner in each.
