UFC Auckland: Twitter reacts to Paul Felder vs. Dan Hooker

See how Twitter reacted to the lightweight main event of UFC Auckland between Paul Felder and Dan Hooker.

Dan Hooker has elevated himself in the UFC lightweight title picture as a result of his split decision win over Paul Felder in the main event of UFC Auckland.

Felder entered this bout off back-to-back wins over James Vick and Edson Barboza and five of his last six fights, with the sole loss coming at welterweight. Felder’s 155-pound win streak also included finishes of Alessandro Ricci, Stevie Ray and Charles Oliveira.

Hooker, a New Zealand native, entered this bout off back-to-back wins of his own against Vick and Al Iaquinta. Hooker had won six of the seven bouts he’s had since dropping to the UFC’s lightweight division, also scoring finishes of Ross Pearson, Marc Diakiese, Jim Miller and Gilbert Burns.

With both men sitting just outside the top-five of the UFC’s lightweight rankings, they were jockeying for position entering tonight’s contest.

And the man who did just that was Hooker. In an absolutely competitive war, which saw both men trading leg kicks and combinations throughout, and finish nearly even in the strikes total, it was Hooker, who scored a late final-round takedown that got the nod from two of the three judges at cageside.

With the win, Hooker is just about guaranteed to set himself up into possible prime lightweight title contention — albeit he will have to await the winner of UFC 249’s Khabib Nurmagomedov vs. Tony Ferguson clash, as well as a possible Nurmagomedov vs. Conor McGregor rematch, and win any and all fights in the interim.

UFC Auckland took place on Saturday, Feb. 22, 2020, live from the Spark Aena in UFC Auckland, New Zealand. Follow along with FanSided MMA all your live results and highlights.
