The NBA season has been suspended after Rudy Gobert tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Which NBA players and personnel have also tested positive?

The NBA season came apart at the seams on Wednesday night as a strange delay held up the beginning of the game between the Oklahoma City Thunder and the Utah Jazz, sending both teams back to the locker room. It was then announced that the game was being postponed. Soon after that, news broke that the delay was because Jazz center Rudy Gobert had tested positive for the novel coronavirus. Now, his teammate Donovan Mitchell has also tested positive. A later press release from the Jazz seemed to indicate that everyone else tested last night — players, team and media personnel — had all tested negative.

The NBA quickly announced that the season was being suspended. It remains to be seen whether any of the season can still be salvaged but, for now, we’re still waiting to see the full scope of the outbreak as it pertains to the league and its players.

The timing of Gobert’s positive result indicates he was likely already carrying the virus when played 31 minutes against the Raptors on Monday night, if not earlier. As Statmuse pointed out, every NBA team could be connected in the span of just five days, meaning the virus has probably already spread to other locker rooms.

Assuming the availability of testing materials, it’s likely that every player in the league will be tested in the near future. The Raptors have already told their players to self-quarantine for the next 14 days. The charter plane that the Jazz took to Oklahoma City was also used by the Magic and Grizzlies in the past few days. And The Athletic’s Sam Amick has reported it is safe to assume that every team who has played the Jazz recently will be tested soon.

Here is an updated list here of positive test results that have been reported:

Boston Celtics

Marcus Smart

Brooklyn Nets

Kevin Durant
Three other players have tested positive, identities not released

Detroit Pistons

Christian Wood

Los Angeles Lakers

Two players have tested positive, identities not released

Utah Jazz

Rudy Gobert
Donovan Mitchell

To date, more than 180,000 cases (and 7,00 deaths) have been confirmed in more than 160 countries worldwide, including the United States, which has seen more than 4,000 affected Americans and 75 deaths. The World Health Organization officially declared the outbreak a pandemic on March 9 and countries have implemented curfews, travel bans and mandatory quarantines to help prevent its spread.
