The Tampa Bay Buccaneers are signing legendary quarterback Tom Brady. So what does the future hold for much-maligned Jameis Winston?

He was the first overall pick in the 2015 NFL Draft. And unfortunately for five-year signal-caller James Winston, the word “pick” has become synonymous with the talented but mistake-prone signal-caller.

The 2013 Heisman Trophy winner and former Florida State standout led the Seminoles to a national championship seven years ago. And in ’14, the school returned to the college playoffs only to be dethroned by the Oregon Ducks. It was a year in which Winston led his team to its share of come-from-behind wins. But many of those deficits that the club rallied form were the results of his miscues.

It was onto Tampa Bay where he has played in a total of 72 contests. There have been a respectable 121 scores through the air. But the strong-armed performer has also served up 88 interceptions and lost 23 fumbles. It adds up to a mind-boggling 111 turnovers. In 2019, Winston led the NFL with 5,109 aerial yards and only Baltimore’s Lamar Jackson (36) threw for more scores than the Buccaneers’ quarterback (33). But he was also picked off 30 times, seven of those returned for scores. Bruce Arians’ squad led the NFL with 41 turnovers in ’19 and Winston totaled 35 of those mistakes.

Now the franchise is headed in a different directions as 20-year pro Tom Brady hopes to lead the Bucs to the playoffs for the first time since 2007. Winston will officially become an unrestricted free agent at 4:00 pm ET today but putting him with another team seems to be difficult at the moment. That’s because some of the clubs looking for help or a change at the position seem to have settled on their successor.

Of course, the New England Patriots now have a job opening. Could Bill Belichick and Josh McDaniels get more production from Winston and fewer mistakes? This is a team that in its last 112 regular-season outings has committed only 103 turnovers.

The Los Angeles Chargers certainly have an opening with veteran Philip Rivers joining the Indianapolis Colts. Of course, Anthony Lynn’s club got an erratic year from their quarterback as well in terms of turnovers. There always seems to be talk in the Windy City when it comes to Mitch Trubisky’s future. But simply put, there may not be a lot of opportunities – especially for a player that seems to be pretty careless with the football.

According to ESPN’s Adam Schefter (via Bleacher Report), “Jameis Winston isn’t expected to land a starting QB job this season.” Perhaps a change of scenery would be best for the talented passer. Could he actually remain in Tampa and learn behind Brady? Or maythe 26-year-old pro sit back and sort out the NFL quarterback landscape over the next few months?

It’s hard to believe that we have seen the last of the first overall selection in the draft from five years ago.
