Vinny Magalhaes gave fans an update after he suffered a gruesome leg injury against Craig Jones in the main event of Submission Underground 13.

On Sunday, April 26, MMA veteran and ADCC champion Vinny Magalhaes met Australian grappling star Craig Jones in the main event of Submission Underground 13. Just seconds into the match, Jones attacked Magalhaes with what appeared to be a fully-applied inside heel hook. With his foot turned 180 degrees in the wrong direction, Magalhaes refused to tap and escaped the position to the surprise of many fans. Moments later, Magalhaes was again caught in the same submission, and again he miraculously escaped.

The damage to Magalhaes’ leg had been done, though. After Jones and Magalhaes exchanged words mid-match, with Jones seemingly unsure if he should continue to attack Magalhaes’ leg, Magalhaes verbally submitted, acknowledging the injury that Jones’ leg locks had caused.

Shortly after the event, Magalhaes posted an update on the injury to Instagram. Despite the loss and what appeared to be a rather gruesome injury, Magalhaes was in good spirits, joking with Jones.

Magalhaes explains that, while he does have some rather extreme flexibility in his legs and ankles, the first heel hook that Jones applied appeared to go past Magalhaes’ normal limit. Magalhaes states that he felt no pain, but rather instability. When Jones applied the second heel hook, again on the same leg, Magalhaes again (somehow) felt no pain, but with his leg still unstable, he decided to submit.

In the video, Magalhaes is seen standing on his own accord on what appears to be a swollen ankle, calmly explaining that his foot had been twisted nearly all the way around as a result of Jones’ leg locks. Still, Magalhaes says that he felt no pressure on his knee, which is the typical target of a heel hook.
