3. Arizona Cardinals

The Cardinals deserve a lot of credit for sticking to their board in Round 1 and coming away with Isaiah Simmons. He doesn’t fill one of the team’s biggest needs, but he’s just the sort of talent that can take their defensive to a whole new level.

Getting Josh Jones in the third round might even be a better value selection. He’s going to come in and make Kyler Murray’s life easier immediately. The former Houston star isn’t a mauler on the outside, but he keeps opposing edge rushers away from the quarterback. Getting a starting tackle on Day Two is great value. Pulling that off in Round 3 is the stuff draft dreams are made of.

The rest of the Cardinals draft wasn’t quite as strong, but it’s still easy to see a path for multiple guys to become quality contributors. Neither Leiki Fotu or Rashard Lawrence is going to do much rushing the passer, but they can clog the middle for an Arizona defense that needs to improve against the run.

Evan Weaver is a sixth-round pick that can also help strengthen the Cardinals’ front seven. He may never be a star, but he profiles as a solid reserve linebacker who can really stand out on special teams. Don’t discount the possibility of him becoming an important contributor during his rookie campaign.

The Cardinals want to win now and this class will help them do just that. Both Wirfs and Jones can really help this young corps continue to grow.
